14th Aug 2025 - If the following things happen, then you need to take an action and update your work permit & residence permit!

According to the Exit and Entry Administration Law of China, even you have a valid residence permit, if these things happen, you still need to report to the authority and update your work permit or residence permit in a certain time, take shanghai as an example:

Scenario 1- You moved house:

Time limit: Within 24 hours after you move to the new address.
Action: Update your new address and get the new "Registration form of temporary residence". You can do this online in shanghai (Link: https://gaj.sh.gov.cn/crj/24hr/web/zcbd/login?relogin=true).

Scenario 2- You got a new passport:

Time limit: Within 10 days from the date when you received your new passport.
Action: Transfer your old residence permit into the new passport.
*If you got your new passport outside of China, then please take above action as soon as your come back to China.

Scenario 3- Employment contract terminated:

Time limit: Within 10 days from your termination date.
Action: Cancel your work permit + residence permit.
*Especially for the work permit, since the work permit system is a national system, if you didn't cancel your old work permit properly, it will affect your next work permit application.

Scenario 4- Salary decreased:

Time limit: Within 30 days from the date of change.
Action: Re-evaluate & update your work permit.
*Only for foreigner who made a payroll commitment (Check the following sample) to the authority when they first-time apply their work permit, such as category A (600K annual salary), category B (400K annual salary), or category B (60 points system) etc., then it is necessary to re-evaluate the qualification of work permit and apply a corresponding modification.

Scenario 5- Have a newborn baby in China:

Time limit: Within 60 days from the date of birth.
Action: Apply for the new passport + family residence permit for baby.
